MIRY Concertzaal in Ghent, a historic 504-seat hall built between 1900–1908, was recently renovated with a discreet, programmable lighting system that enhances its architectural features and musical ambiance while preserving its historical integrity.
Nestled in the historic heart of Ghent, MIRY Concert Hall, a vibrant cultural landmark for over a century, has hosted daily performances. With 504 seats, it was recently renovated, including a state-of-the-art lighting system enhancing both architectural beauty and functionality.
Built between 1900–1908, the trapezoidal hall features sidewalls converging toward the stage. The ornate interior is marked by a rhythmic sequence of pilasters framing painted frescoes. Above each, medallions bear busts and names of renowned composers. The stage houses a magnificent organ, the hall’s striking focal point.
Lighting was designed to be discreet yet highly effective, respecting historical integrity while enhancing visibility, ambiance and architectural details: Projectors with symmetrical and oval beams, mounted on discreet tracks, ensure even and balanced illumination; Subtle accent lights at each pilaster’s base define architectural rhythm, adding depth and hierarchy; Track-mounted fixtures parallel to the sidewalls wash decorative panels and medallions with precise accents, highlighting their intricate details; A centrally mounted track system, following the curve of the ceiling’s stage-lighting opening, carries oval-beam projectors delivering ambient lighting, supporting orientation, readability and visual comfort in seating areas and passageways; Additional diffuse lighting on the back wall illuminates the balcony and loggias; The organ, centrepiece of the hall, is highlighted by projectors suspended from tracks above the stage, reinforcing its architectural prominence.
The system is remotely focused, dimmed and programmed via a DMX control linked to the main console, allowing seamless adjustment for different performance needs and atmospheres - ensuring a harmonious blend of historical grandeur and modern functionality that enhances musical experiences and architectural appreciation.
