The Antwerp Lighting Masterplan, approved in 2012, uses a three-layered lighting strategy to create a cohesive nighttime identity that aligns with the city's spatial vision, enhances safety and ambience, and strengthens neighbourhood character and the local economy.

The Antwerp Lighting Masterplan (ALP), developed by Susanna Antico Lighting Design Studio, is a key strategic tool for guiding urban lighting interventions in line with the city’s spatial vision.
It ensures coherent implementation over time, respecting budget constraints and prioritizing actions.

Antwerp, Belgium’s second-largest city with 500,000 residents, spans 125 km² (excluding the port). The ALP supports and enhances the future nighttime cityscape as envisioned by the Antwerp Strategic Spatial Structure Plan (sRSA).

Officially approved by the city council in March 2012, the plan introduces a layered lighting concept designed to shape a cohesive nocturnal identity.

The first layer, base layer, adheres to regulatory norms for general street lighting.

The second, structural layer, defines major traffic arteries, ensuring visibility and orientation.

The third, ambience layer, adds character and emotional resonance, making urban areas inviting and vibrant at night. It plays a vital role in strengthening neighbourhood identity, encouraging outdoor activity, and stimulating the local economy.

The ALP treats similar elements with distinct lighting approaches to highlight their unique qualities.

Large bodies of water, such as the Schelde river and nearby reservoirs, gain visual significance when properly lit, contributing to Antwerp’s nighttime identity. This thoughtful layering transforms lighting into a civic and cultural asset—shaping how citizens experience the city after dark.
